Retention

After your braces are removed, retention treatment is necessary so that your teeth do not shift back to their previous positions. To maintain your new, straight smile, our orthodontists may recommend a retainer in Beaufort, Bluffton, and Hilton Head South Carolina. Retainers are devices that are custom fit to maintain the alignment of your smile and bite.

Wearing your retainer as prescribed is very important. If your teeth are not retained with this device, they may drift towards their original positions. Even though your teeth have been successfully straightened, your teeth will not be completely settled in their new positions until your bones, gums, and muscles become adapted to the change. Generally, retainers are worn at all times for the first year and then are worn during sleep. This time frame will vary based on your individual needs.
